SS316 Stainless Steel Test Balls for Metal Detector Verification

A certified AISI 316 stainless steel sphere as a bare ball. The molybdenum in 316 is what makes it survive brine, acid and hard washdown — and what makes it even less visible to a metal detector than 304. On lines built in 316, this is the sphere that gives a truthful answer.

Contaminant type: Stainless Steel 316 (molybdenum-alloyed austenitic, very low detectability). Available in sphere diameters from 1.0 mm to 12.0 mm — in 0.5 mm steps up to 10.0 mm, plus 11.0 mm and 12.0 mm.

Key features

  • AISI 316 sphere for equipment and specifications built in 316 stainless
  • Lowest detectability of the standard contaminant set
  • Bare format for free-fall, gravity and in-pack verification
  • Verifies detection and reject timing in one pass
  • Uniquely numbered for audit traceability
  • 21 sphere sizes from 1.0 mm to 12.0 mm

Matching the test piece to the equipment grade

If the augers, sieves and pipework on a line are 316, then a fragment breaking loose will be 316, and verifying with 304 quietly overstates how protected the line is. Seafood, dairy, brine and marinade producers therefore specify 316 test pieces, and several retailer standards now ask for it by name. As a bare ball the sphere can be released into the falling product on a gravity detector or sealed inside a representative pack, so the check covers detection and reject timing together under the least favourable conditions.

Also available in Ferrous, Non-Ferrous and SS304 as test balls, or as a SS316 test wand and a SS316 flexible test wand. Browse the full range of certified metal detector test pieces.

Certificate included

Every Detectronic test piece in this range is supplied with its corresponding traceability certificate. The certificate records the material, the test sphere size and a unique certificate number, so the physical test piece you hold can always be matched to its documentation.

The unique certificate number is marked on the test piece itself, which is what makes the link between the piece and its paperwork defensible during an audit or a customer inspection.
