Ferrous Test Balls for Metal Detector Verification

A certified ferrous test sphere supplied as a bare ball, without a wand or carrier. The bare format exists because some tests only work if the sphere can go into the product itself — dropped down a free-fall chute, mixed into a batch of powder, or placed inside a pack before it is sealed and sent through the detector.

Contaminant type: Ferrous (magnetic iron and carbon steel). Available in sphere diameters from 1.0 mm to 12.0 mm — in 0.5 mm steps up to 10.0 mm, plus 11.0 mm and 12.0 mm.

Key features

  • Bare certified sphere — no wand or carrier
  • Magnetic ferrous material, the baseline contaminant type
  • Designed to be introduced into the product stream itself
  • Suits free-fall, gravity and in-pack verification
  • Individually numbered and traceable to its certificate
  • 21 sphere sizes from 1.0 mm to 12.0 mm

When a bare test ball is the right choice

Free-fall and gravity detectors handling powders, granulates and small pieces cannot realistically be tested with a rod. A ferrous ball introduced into the falling product travels the same path a real fragment would, at the same speed, through the same part of the aperture — which is the only way to prove the detector and its reject flap respond in time. Ferrous balls are also used for in-pack validation, where the sphere is sealed inside a representative pack, and for periodic bulk-product checks in mills, spice plants and pet food lines.

Also available in Non-Ferrous, SS304 and SS316 as test balls, or as a Ferrous test wand and a Ferrous flexible test wand. Browse the full range of certified metal detector test pieces.

Certificate included

Every Detectronic test piece in this range is supplied with its corresponding traceability certificate. The certificate records the material, the test sphere size and a unique certificate number, so the physical test piece you hold can always be matched to its documentation.

The unique certificate number is marked on the test piece itself, which is what makes the link between the piece and its paperwork defensible during an audit or a customer inspection.
