Ferrous Test Wands for Metal Detector Verification

A certified ferrous test sphere encapsulated in a rigid, colour-coded rod. Ferrous is the contaminant type an industrial metal detector responds to most strongly, because the sphere is both magnetic and conductive, so the ferrous wand is normally the first piece run in a sensitivity check and the one that establishes the detector is working at all.

Contaminant type: Ferrous (magnetic iron and carbon steel). Available in sphere diameters from 1.0 mm to 12.0 mm in 0.5 mm steps.

Key features

  • Magnetic ferrous sphere — the reference contaminant for baseline sensitivity testing
  • Colour-coded rod so ferrous is never confused with non-ferrous or stainless pieces
  • Contaminant type and sphere diameter marked directly on the wand
  • Unique certificate number on the piece itself, so it can be matched to its paperwork during an audit
  • Rigid format for conveyor, tunnel and reject-point testing
  • 23 sphere sizes from 1.0 mm to 12.0 mm

How ferrous test wands are used

In a food processing HACCP plan the metal detector is a critical control point, and the ferrous wand is passed with the product at start-up, at every shift change and after any change to product, packaging or detector settings. Because ferrous contamination in a plant typically comes from wear of steel machine parts, broken blades, staples and swarf, the ferrous check is the one most often demanded by retailer audits and standards such as BRCGS and IFS. Detecting the ferrous sphere on the first pass confirms the search head, timing and reject mechanism are all functioning before the harder non-ferrous and stainless steel checks are run.

Also available in Non-Ferrous, SS304 and SS316 as test wands, or as a Ferrous flexible test wand and a Ferrous test ball. Browse the full range of certified metal detector test pieces.

Certificate included

Every Detectronic test piece in this range is supplied with its corresponding traceability certificate. The certificate records the material, the test sphere size and a unique certificate number, so the physical test piece you hold can always be matched to its documentation.

The unique certificate number is marked on the test piece itself, which is what makes the link between the piece and its paperwork defensible during an audit or a customer inspection.
