SS304 Stainless Steel Test Balls for Metal Detector Verification

A certified AISI 304 stainless steel sphere supplied as a bare ball. Stainless is the contaminant a metal detector struggles most to see, and dropping a bare 304 ball through the product stream is the most demanding — and most honest — verification a free-fall or gravity system can be given.

Contaminant type: Stainless Steel 304 (austenitic, weakly magnetic, low conductivity). Available in sphere diameters from 1.0 mm to 12.0 mm — in 0.5 mm steps up to 10.0 mm, plus 11.0 mm and 12.0 mm.

Key features

  • AISI 304 austenitic stainless sphere in bare ball form
  • The benchmark contaminant for worst-case sensitivity figures
  • For free-fall, gravity and in-product verification
  • Reflects how a real stainless fragment travels through the aperture
  • Individually numbered and matched to its traceability certificate
  • 21 sphere sizes from 1.0 mm to 12.0 mm

The test that sets the line sensitivity

Because the smallest reliably detectable SS304 sphere is always larger than the ferrous equivalent, that figure is what ends up in the HACCP plan and on the certificate of analysis a customer asks for. Testing it as a bare ball travelling inside the product — rather than as a rod held near the aperture wall — is what makes the figure defensible. Mills, spice and ingredient plants, bakery premix lines and pet food producers use SS304 balls for exactly this reason, since stainless mesh, wire and blade fragments are the most probable contaminant in that equipment.

Also available in Ferrous, Non-Ferrous and SS316 as test balls, or as a SS304 test wand and a SS304 flexible test wand. Browse the full range of certified metal detector test pieces.

Certificate included

Every Detectronic test piece in this range is supplied with its corresponding traceability certificate. The certificate records the material, the test sphere size and a unique certificate number, so the physical test piece you hold can always be matched to its documentation.

The unique certificate number is marked on the test piece itself, which is what makes the link between the piece and its paperwork defensible during an audit or a customer inspection.

Stocked products are dispatched within 24 hours on working days. Typical delivery is 1–3 working days within the EU and 2–5 working days internationally. Delivery times may vary depending on destination, carrier and customs clearance.

Does my test piece include a certificate?

Yes. Relevant Detectronic test pieces are supplied with their corresponding traceability certificate, allowing the test piece to be linked to its documentation via its unique certificate number.

Which sphere size should I order?

The sphere size you verify with is normally set by your own HACCP plan, customer specification or detector sensitivity assessment. This product is available from 1.0 mm to 12.0 mm in 0.5 mm steps. If you are not sure which size applies to your line, contact us and we will help.
